When a person lies frequently and for no obvious reason, it’s likely to be characterized as pathological. While lying in and of itself is a common human behavior, it’s typically done for a reason-such as to avoid social embarrassment or upset. They may or may not understand the consequences of their behavior, believing in some cases that they are telling “white lies.” They may have trouble sticking to the truth-even if it becomes clear that their lies might be causing harm to themselves or others. Pathological or compulsive liars may lie frequently and excessively and may have difficulty distinguishing between reality and what they’ve invented.
